5 Affordable Places to Go to in Tagaytay on a Budget

Tagaytay City has always been a quick and cold escape from the city. Aside from the temperature to enjoy, Tagaytay also offers a lot of places to visit and things to try, but most of it will have you spending. However, I thought of listing the things the boyfriend and I used to do in Tagaytay whenever we wanted to go on a "date" but on a tight budget. We used to go to Tagaytay a lot during college because I am from Cavite, and he is from Laguna, and somehow, Tagaytay has always been our "middle" place, because aside of the cool temperature, there are some things you can do here whilst not spending a lot.

La Sallette Shrine and Retreat Center - Free

Tagaytay is also known for churches and retreat centers--one of them is the La Sallette Shrine and Retreat Center. It's best to go here on a Sunday so you can hear the mass. Plus, I'm not that sure if they will let you in on a weekday there, especially if there's no event on that specific day. La Sallette is a huge compound; there's a mini-park a few walks away from the church. However, you can go church-hopping, since you're already there. Some of the famous churches in Tagaytay are Pink Sisters and Lourdes church.

How to get there (commute): If you're coming from Manila, go to Coastal Mall. There you'll find the Southwest Integrated Provincial Terminal with buses that are bound to Cavite and Batangas. Take the bus going to Tagaytay and ask the conductor/driver to drop you off in La Sallette.

Tagaytay Picnic Grove - Php 50.00/head

Back in college, the entrance fee here used to be only 25 pesos, but now it was raised to 50 pesos. Anyway, it's still cheap so whenever you just want to feel the cool breeze in Tagaytay but worried about the budget, you can stay all day here. Payment is paid through the entrance gate. If you have a vehicle with you, the parking fees vary--35 pesos for car/van; 50 pesos for a jeepney; and 100 pesos for a bus. If you are a group, you can rent their cottage with a fee varying from 100 to 500 pesos, depending on how big is the cottage that you guys will rent. However, you can bring your own mat or cloth and just lay it on the grass--it's free! If by chance you don't have food with you, you can buy from some stores in the picnic area.

The Picnic Grove also offers activities but with an additional cost. They have the zip line and cable cars for rent: For a one-way ride, 200 pesos on a weekday and 300 pesos on a weekend; For a two-way/round trip ride, it's 300 pesos on a weekday and 400 pesos on a weekend. The rate is inclusive of a souvenir photo! If you're acrophobic (a person who has fear of heights), there's also a horse-back ride that's for 200 pesos/hour and a fish spa.

How to get there (commute):
  • If you're coming from Manila, go to Coastal Mall. There you'll find the Southwest Integrated Provincial Terminal with buses that are bound to Cavite and Batangas. Take the bus going to Tagaytay and ask the conductor/driver to drop you off in Olivarez. There, ride a jeep (for 10 to 20 pesos maybe) or a tricycle going to Picnic Grove (60 to 70 pesos).
  • If you're coming from La Sallette, just ride a bus or jeep bound for Tagaytay/Mendez. Ask to be dropped off at Olivarez, then ride a jeep (less than 50 pesos maybe) or a tricycle going to Picnic Grove (60 to 70 pesos).

Magallanes Drive - Free

Magallanes Drive has been famous for having numerous restaurants along the highway. From fast food to restaurants and whatnots. They have Starbucks Coffee, YellowCab, Pancake House, Max's, Leslie's, RSM, Pamana, and a whole lot more. But if you are in a budget, try eating in fast food restaurants or eateries nearby.

After that, go to the back of the Starbucks, and have your photos taken at the overlooking view of Taal Volcano. It's free! Whether you are a customer of Starbucks/Antonios/Pancake House or not.

Or, you could always enjoy a warm bowl of Bulalo just like this:

You can have fun at Sky Ranch even on a limited budget. The entrance fee for individual guests is at P80 during weekdays and P100 on weekends. However, there are fees on the rides. You can check them out here.

Robinson's Tagaytay / Summit Ridge - Free

Finally, after all that walking, you may want to go to the mall to relax or eat. Here at Robinson's Tagaytay, you can get yourself full without spending too much on food because there are a lot of food carts that sell food for less than 100 pesos. You can also go to the supermarket if you're not yet satisfied.

Summit Ridge Hotel is also just right beside Robinson's Tagaytay. They sometimes have a tiangge which you can also check out.

Tips when going to Tagaytay on a budget:

  • Bring your food/pack your lunch and snacks
  • Bring a mat/cloth if you plan to go to Picnic Grove
  • Wear sunblock, because even if Tagaytay is a cool place, you're still not safe from sun damage brought about by UV rays
  • Do not hesitate to ask for directions
  • Wear comfortable shoes, because you'll be walking a lot, especially in Picnic Grove
  • Bring a jacket, sweater or scarf just in case the cold temperature is too much for you
  • Bring a camera and power bank ;)
  • Enjoy!!!
