Thomas Wesley Pentz or mostly known as “Diplo” is one of the top DJs worldwide. Ranking 25th at DJMag.com’s list, it’s no surprise to some because of his chart-topping and Grammy award-winning collaborations with famous artists like Justin Bieber, Skrillex and many more.

Diplo is an American DJ, producer, rapper, and singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, California. Apart from being a solo act, he’s also 1/3 and the founder of the American electronic dance music trio Major Lazer, along with fellow DJs Jillionaire and Walshy Fire.

The trio was famous for hits like “Lean On” with MØ and DJ Snake, “Cold Water” with Justin Bieber and MØ, "Bubble Butt" with Bruno Mars, Tyga, 2 Chainz, and Mystic. In fact, there’s a K-pop remix of “Bubble Butt” featuring South Korean big stars G-Dragon and T.O.P! More hits include “Light It Up” with Nyla and Fuse ODG, and their most recent collaboration with Cashmere Cat, “Miss You” with Tory Lanez.

Back in 2013, Major Lazer had their first show at the Palace Pool Club in Manila on December 10. Thankfully after 5 years, Diplo finally came to Cove Manila to do a solo show last May 11, Saturday. After all, he’s had chart-topping collaborations as a solo artist too, like “Where Are Ãœ Now" with Skrillex and Justin Bieber, “Elastic Heart” with Sia and The Weeknd, which his Filipino fans were dying to hear live.

Diplo began his show at half past 1 am. The venue was packed with eager fans waiting for Diplo to perform live. He started with a remix of Beyonce’s “Run The World” and Daft Punk’s “One More Time,” and the audience burst into screams.

Diplo sure knows how to turn up the crowd. Asking us to jump, go low (almost in a sitting position, as Ludacris’ “How Low” plays), wave our hands to the beat of “Tremor” by Dimitri Vegas, Martin Garrix and Like Mike, and even do jumping jacks in between his remixes!

The audience was stoked to hear eargasmic remixes and snippets of various hits like Valentino Khan’s “Deep Down Low”, Rae Sremmurd’s “No Type”, Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow” (which was a crowd favorite, by the way), Baauer’s “Harlem Shake”, and of course, hip-hop hits like “Humble” by Kendrick Lamar, “Congratulations” by Post Malone, “Power” by Kanye West, and “God’s Plan” by Drake.

Diplo also turned up the night with flashback Friday hits like The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army”, Flo Rida’s “Low” and “Good Feeling”, Usher’s “Yeah”, Vengaboys’ “We Like To Party”, Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina” and Panjabi MC’s “Mundian To Bach Ke.” However, it was to everybody’s surprise when Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” started playing. It was a remix though, so everybody was still dancing.

The crowd lost it when he played “Bubble Butt” which was a mashup with Finatticz’ “Don’t Drop That Thun Thun”. But of course, who would not know “Lean On”? Everybody danced and sang along to every lyric. It was then followed by another song from Major Lazer, “Light It Up.”
And then it was time for what everybody has been waiting to hear — “Cold Water”. The audience sang their heart out and was even screaming Justin Bieber’s name.

When “Revolution” started playing, everybody was just dancing. So when Diplo played “Where Are Ãœ Now", which is another song featuring Justin Bieber, the audience was then back into their Bieber frenzy.

And perhaps as a tribute to the late Avici, Diplo ended his almost-two-hour show with “Wake Me Up”.

Special thanks to Cove Manila.
